Diabetes Nutrition Exchange System

Proper nutrition management, insulin injections and oral hypoglycemic agents are important. In order for diabetic care recipient to pick their own food choices they must understand the exchange system:

- 2 tsp. carbohydrates or 10g = 40kcal, (1tsp.= 5g. sugar) which is equivalent to 1 choice of fruit and vegetable
- 1 starch = 1.5 sugar choices

The individual with diabetes is allowed so many choices per day from each of the following sections:

Milk products
- 1/2c liquid milk
- 1/4c evaporated milk

Grain products--> starchy foods

- 1/2 bagel
- 1 plain roll
- 1/4 of 8" pita bread (25g)
- 1 6" tortilla (20g)
- 1/2c dry cereal (20g)
- 1 shredded wheat (20g)
- 1/2c cooked cereal (125g)
- 1c puffed cereal eg. rice crispies (20g)
- 1/3c wheat germ
- 1/2c cooked bulgar (70g) moist
- 1/2c cooked bulgar (40g) crumbly
- 1/2c rice cooked (105g)
- 1/2c cooked pasta (70-80g)

Starchy vegetables
- 1/2c beans, peas dried-->cooked (80g)
- 1/2c corn (canned, frozen) (85g)
- 1/2c cream corn (140g)
- 1/2 potato (95g)

Other foods

- 3c plain popcorn (20g)
- 1 baking powder biscuit (30g)
- 2 cookies (digestive/oatmeal) (20g)
- 1 cup cake (35g) (no icing)
- 1 plain muffin (40g)
- 1c soup (260g)
- 1 pancake (1/4c batter) (50g)
- 10 french fries (oven baked) (65g)

Protein list

- 1oz cheese, partly skim or whole milk (25g)
- 1/4c cottage cheese (50g)

Shellfish

- 10 medium frozen shrimp (30g)
- 51g fresh shrimp (30g)
- 18 small canned shrimp (30g)

Meat and poultry

- Beef, chicken, ham, lamb, back bacon (25g)
- Pork chop (35g)
- 1/2 block tofu (70g)
- Baloney (40g)
- Pork line sausage (25g)
- Spare/short ribs (65g)
- 3 strips side bacon
- 1 tbsp peanut butter (15g)
- 3 tbsp parmeasan (15g)
- 1/3c grated cheese (25g)

Fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables

- 1/2c blueberries
- 1c raspberries/strawberries
- 1 mandarin orange
- 2 kiwis
- 1sl pineapple fresh or canned w/ juice
- 2sl pineapple canned
- 1 tangelo orange (205g)
- 1 dried fig
- 4 halves dried apricots
- 2 prunes
- 2 tbsp raisins
- 2 dried dates
- 10 pods of snow peas
- 8 medium water chestnuts
- 1c saurkraut
- 1c fresh or frozen peas
- 1/3c canned peas
- 1/2c mashed turnips or rutabaga
- 1/3c succotash (lima beans & kernel corn & tomatoes)
- 1/3c O'Brien (grated peppers w/ potatoes)

Fats and oils

- 10 or 5 shelled or 10g peanuts
- 5g peanut butter
- 1 strip side bacon
- 8 sweet almonds
- 2 brazil nuts
